Varnam is the pinnacle of a Bharatha Natyam dance recital. The spoken jathis are illustrated by the dance this sculptured arabesques giving a visual texture to the music. The lyrics give scope for facial expressions, and its repetition allow for more elaborate story-telling. In this particular varnam the dancer pines for Lord Shiva (the lord of dance). She calls her companions and asks them to bring Lord Shiva to her. The dancer then pays homage by narrating anecdotes of Lord Shiva. In this segment the story is that of Markendeya, a 16-year old boy who was saved from the clutches of death because of his devotion to Lord Shiva.
