A few pieces of the extant footage of the last Romanovs - Czar Nicholas II, his German-born Czarina Alexandra and their children, including the heir to the throne, their son Alexei.

Most clips show the royal family in private life: dancing, skating, swimming and so on.

  • Photos of Grand Dutchess Tatiana show that she was a beautiful girl. She and her family might have survived the Russian Revolution if the UK government and monarch had acted more bravely.

  • hi Garrison446 - just watched a documentary on the Romanovs and apparently the British government offered asylum to the Romanov family but then had to withdraw it at the insistence of King George V (seen in telegrams from the king to the PM) - i guess he imagined the Russians in England might import revolution and make his own throne less stable - a shameful episode for the british royal family

  • too bad i ain;t got a time machine

  • hey halosapien1 - and sadly mine has broken down, leaving me stranded in 2012 :<

  • Just like steppin back in time. Though I would never admit it, this is even before my parents were born.

  • hi lajmh - same here - my grandparents' time - love the time travel thing though!

  • The informal stuff is very touching - a happy family with an unhappy destiny.

    Thanks Nick.

  • Nicholas II never wanted to be the tsar. He even said he was unprepared. As for entitlements and royal privileges, he lived pretty simply in Tsarkoë Selo, the tsar's palace.

He slept on an army cot. His children took cold showers except in the evening or when they were sick.

Also, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei were all Nicholas and Alexandra's children, so I would think that all their fates are equally tragic, not just Anastasia's.

This is a silly simplistic distortion of what happened.
