    Remember, when a function is called in C, the arguments are sent by value. So if I do int bar = 42; foo(bar), foo will get the value 42. If I wanted to change the value of bar with foo, it wont work. To make this work, we send foo the address of bar. int *x = &bar; The ampersand gives the address of bar and stores it in the pointer x. Then calling foo(bar) will send the address of bar to foo. This is called passing arguments by reference. You could also call foo(&bar) directly, but that's no fun
