  • Altynai Asylmuratova was also listed in People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in 1992. No super-high, contortionist extension, no mutiple pirouetting ability, no great technical strengths for which today's ballerinas are much admired, Asylmuratova had none of these. What she offered instead was much rarer, unerring musicality, an inate sense of drama and a burning, shimmering stage charisma that could light up the darkest St. Petersburg night. Balllerinas like that come once in an age.
