It's the giant squid carcass, on load from the Smithsonian, currently on display at the Georgia Aquarium. We apparently were the most excited people there. Personally, I don't care if it has been dead for years and years, it's the closest I've gotten to one of the things. I put my hand into shot for a bit of size perspective, not to prove to the dead beast that I'm married.

  • why couldn't they just keep the poor creature alive??

  • @OlaCola03: If I remember correctly it was found dead washed up on a beach a couple of decades ago. There's no "keeping the poor creature alive" because we have none in captivity.

  • I checked last time I was there--because I didn't see it either--and I heard they had taken it off exhibit to try and preserve it better, as it is very deteriorated. No ETA as to when or if it will be back.

  • @JO3L101: He was that way when I found him! Honest! I swear!!

  • You know too much, Mortals2k13. Stay where you are. Someone will be there...shortly.

  • Heya, is this thing still there? If so, I guess I have to bug an unwilling contact to see it. >_>

  • Blue: It was there last time I stopped in...I think they have it on loan there for a while...to make doubly sure, though, call them to confirm: 404-581-4000

  • poor squid i dont know why i watched this video (shame on me!)

  • @fkkkkkenig actually they have, but they werent captured, well one was, but it died upon reaching the surface, both encounters were in waters off Japan, in 2004 there was a science team trying to capture natural footage of one, adn they did, it was about 30 feet long, it was at a depth of over 1000 feet, the 2nd encounter yielded a Juvenile Female which got caught on a line and they tried to haul it up but the struggle was too taxing on the squid it basically died of exhaustion at the surface

  • @Widgett not only that, their incredibly elusive deepsea creatures, it wasnt till 2004 that anyone had filmed one in its natural habitat, the 1500+ feet depths it tends to call home, plus itd be next to impossible to keep one alive in captivity, we wouldnt be able to fulfill the needs of the creature even if it could be caught and transported alive and safely, as enormous as Arciteuthis Dux get, their a very delicate creature, keeping one in captivity alive may not be possible for humans

  • @fkkkkkenig I see

  • @OlaCola03 no giant squid has ever been found alive.

  • I agree :)

  • @kicknbazz1615 no, just let it free

  • @OlaCola03 Do you relize how hard it would be to keep a giant squid in captivity?!?!

  • im going there =)
