This video highlights the troop care package project at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).
Students, staff, faculty, alums, family and friends donate items and help put together these packages. Since the start of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, hundreds of care packages have been sent to our soldiers.
The names of those that are serving are provided to us by members of the campus community.
The pictures are those that were sent back by the soldiers after receiving their care packages. Each time a soldier writes us back, a copy of that letter or email is sent to the entire MSOE campus community. We have sent out over 100 soldier responses to the campus.
Copies of their letters to our campus community are then sent over to the MSOE Walter Schroeder Library for inclusion in the archives of the University.
Sadly, since these wars began, we have had soldiers, who have received our care packages, killed in the wars. We mention this only to emphasize the importance of the care packages and the personalized letters/notes that get included inside as a means to letting these soldiers know we have not forgotten them. A permanent wall and flag display was created in the Cudahy Student Center to honor of those that have served. http://www.wpt.org/npa/ram/inwisconsin/IW629_blogger.wvx
Donations for the troop care packages have come from individuals, groups and families associated with MSOE. In addition, various MSOE departments and individuals on campus contribute to the project. Department support has come from WMSE: music CDs, DVDs, T-shirts; Registrar: letters/cards, soccer balls/soccer clothing, beanie babies; CCSD: beanie babies/school supplies; Placement: soccer balls, notes/letters; Servant-Leadership: postage; Student Activities/Student Organizations: creating the packages, mailing process, candy, snacks, etc; Library: books; Bookstore: bumper stickers, cards/letters, t-shirts; Enrollment: pens; Marketing/Public Affairs: magazines, greeting cards, etc. and individual faculty/staff/alums who have donated hundreds of dollars to support the care package project.
In addition, we have sent hundreds of pounds of school supplies and toys for the children in both those countries.
These items are sent to one of the soldiers in those countries who works with their units in dispersing them to schools and individual children.
Special thanks to all those that have served, continue to serve and will serve in the future.
