My apologies, the scenes really could've been edited better by someone with more experience, but the jist of the idea is here...

There's very little doubt that Hans Zimmer's score to Pirates of the Caribbean remains one of the most popular action scores of all time. However, it's most certainly not the only pirate film score ever written. While the film Cutthroat Island was a major financial and critical flop, many film score critics agree that John Debney's score to the film is not only one of the best action/adventure scores of the 90s, it's one of the best and most underrated film scores of all time.

Having owned the complete score and spent many many hours listening to it from start to finish, I completely agree. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that it may just be my favorite single film score of all time. Hans Zimmer's score worked for the film, but I really wish the producers had hired John Debney. There are so many cues that are filled with an indescribable spirit of high adventure.

It really has to be heard from start to finish to appreciate it fully. Influenced by the sounds of Korngold and Wagner, Debney worked hard with a full orchestra...no electronics to be heard in this score whatsoever. I can listen to it again and again, and it's one of the very few scores that never loses its polish after many listens.

This video was inspired by tolkfan's wonderful video where he put the track "Carriage Chase" into a scene from the first POTC film. Check it out! The track is called "Morgan Takes the Ship" by John Debney.

  • as if that lousy hooker would stand a chance against that british warbird... lol

  • It's a great song, but it is not nearly as epic as Hans Zimmer's. The piece that you have presented is more light hearted, curious, and heroic. But Zimmer's piece is much heavier while still being fun, it goes with the fact that not all of the characters are your typical hero and have darker sides to them. Plus I just love the fact that Zimmer's piece can be lightened to a very carefree and adventurous mood, then tossed right into a heavy mood that emulates the sound of cannon fire. Zimmer= Epic

  • Yargh maties! welcome aboard

  • As much as I LOVE the original soundtrack, and appreciate its great themes, this music just fits better.

  • Great job! Perfect cuts. I love Cutthroat Island's soundtrack !!!

  • dude, shivers down my back. I think I might make one these CI/POTC mashups myself. I certainly agree with this being one of the best soundtracks ever
