Played on Toca Elite Pro Series congas. By Michael Pluznick and friends.
From a soon to be released, "How to play Afro Cuban Congas" DVD by Michael Pluznick. Played on Toca Elite Pro Series congas. Michael Pluznick white shirt quinto, Wade Peterson "Bombo" (Surdo) drum, Kim Atkinson on 2 congas.
In 1985 I went to Cuba and with Kim Atkinson (playing two congas and taking the 2nd solo in this video) and found and studied with the late great Pello El Afrocan in Havana Cuba where we learned this composition of traditional afro cuban drumming called "Mozambique. Pello told us he named Mozambique after a small country in Africa he wanted to recognize. He also creadted a Mozambique dance craze and he made several Mozambique record albims before he passed away.

  • You guys are great! Best wishes to my old drum teacher - Kim.

  • @tmckinnon i know right! i think that is so cool!! im glad im not the only one who feels this way! pretty cool....

  • @anonymous10001000 ... man... i was also thinking that. I've been playing some Samba too.. and sometimes I fill a measure or two with one of the other, and they do mesh pretty close, and have some similar feeling.

  • @tmckinnon (nice fills in between really)

  • hrm. michael... I've picked up a few variations of mozambique, i'm striving to better understand how it's put together with all of the parts including the rumba clave. but it's hard because I've only learned the basic conga variations. regarding the lower part that kim is playing It sounds like the mozambique popular but split between you two (as the cubans do it). regarding kim's part are the two low (tumba?) drums notes at the END of the cycle with the one just about to come or are they on 1?

  • AMAZING ! I AM SO HAPPY TO FINALLY SEE SOMEONE DEDICATED, THAT CAN TEACH THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC ! Question where you guys drummers before you studied congas or were you percussionists? P.S. I CAN NOT WAIT TO BUY THIS DVD SET ! From the brothers of Cuba. Puerto Rico.

  • CUBAAAAA Y PUERTO RICOOOO QUE BELLAS LAS DOS!

  • Rhumba clave?

  • bueno pero cruzado

  • wow, im from Brazil, and i can see similarities with samba......

i guess the african slave rythms mixed in with rythms from the iberian peninsula (spain, portugal) are really similar
