http://vault.ncaa.com/ Twenty years after UCLA's last NCAA title and 15 years since its last Final Four, UCLA returned to national prominence by defeating the defending national champion Arkansas 89-78.
@NuvolariF1 He actually got FIRED after the 95 - 96 season for lying to the university. Steve Lavin coached the 96-97 team and got beat out by Minnesota in the elite eight that year . Harrick did get in trouble along with his son in 02 and 03 when he coached at Georgia . They had to vacate most of those games in that period and he hasn't coached since. So UCLA is very fortunate that # 11 is still hanging in the rafters.
Although drafted by the Suns, he did not have a long NBA career. Toby was a phenomenal freshman player, 6-5 to 6-6, slasher type of a player with hops, I though he might have left after his freshman year, maybe should have but staying with UCLA with mediocre record after the national championship may have hurt his stock, Nevertheless, Toby will be legendary in how he played duiring that tournament especially how he played the final game. Toby, you're still my boy!!!
@TUowl05 Harrick got caught in the recruiting violation of Byron Davis, so Harrick left after the 1996-97 season, other that that no other forms of unethical actions by Harrick.
@sptrfn Shoulda, coulda, woulda, UCLA was ranked #1 that year and stayed that ranking all the way to the tournament. UCLA never lost a National Championship when they were ranked #1 going into the tournament. Yes, the second game was a wake-up call for the Bruins but after that they dominated the rest of the way, so please spare your sob story of who should have been in the Final Four. UCLA, the most NCAA National Chmapionship in Basketball and of all collegiate sports. GO BRUINS!!!!!!
This could have been U-Conn's first title. If Edney doesn't make the shot against Mizzou in Round 2, U-Conn would have ended up in Seattle. They would have had to play Missouri or Missisippi St. in the regional final, and they would have beaten either one of those teams that year.
Also, Arkansas should have beaten Kentucky in the SEC Final, and been in their region. It should have been Arkansas, Kentucky, Okla. St, and U-Conn in the Final Four that year.
This is an extremely shady title for UCLA. Harrick was crooked everywhere he coached. We only know part of what happened in Westwood. I pulled for UCLA in this game but 16 years later i kinda wish Arkansas won.
That guy messed everything up right before the buzzer...he killed the momentum.

Arkansas has come a long way since these years... sad we are in the bottom of the SEC (a very weak conference) these days.
