Any idea what type of flag was captured during the Seven Days from the 8th Illinois Cav? The 7th North Carolina reported capturing a "color."

I believe it was a guidon, but the 8th Illinois never mentioned the loss.

..after the civil war...was the 8th disbanded?...or where they mustered down to MO to fight in the indian wars??

They Mustered out July 17, 1865 after the war. They were famous for firing the first shot at Gettysburg.

Lots of training. Our Horses ignore most of the shooting going on. You keep firing on and around them, til they get used to it.

Lyman B. King was my grandfather and he was in the 8th illinois cavalry during the civil war in F company. I was wondering if anyone had any info on him of the 8th cav in general. I was also wondering if I could become an honorary member of the 8th cav and wear his rank. I contacted there commander on ther reg website but no response.

@yark72 I found some more guidons captured from the 8th Illinois after a exhausting search at the Library of Congress and National Archives. We are trying to come out with the first ever, two book series on captured Confederate and Union flags.

Yark72, I know about the 12th Va, "Black Hawk" flag captured. Would you know of any more captured Confederate flags/guidons? I know the 8th Illinois captured many more then just one flag. That is the tough part.

I have on my files the 12th Va Cav lost a flag at Poolesville, Maryland.

The 7th North Carolina infantry regiment captured some "color" from the 8th Illinois Cavalry regiment. I think it was a guidon.

Not much has been written about Union Cavalry regiments that lost a color. I have found so many, I can why nobody has researched it.

Dear Yark72: Thanks for the info..will do more research. We Compete in cowboy mounted shooting and have played in the cavalry class started about 4 years ago as well. Have done some "living history" cavalry troop ceremonies but would like to creat more of a history for my trooper...right now we are looking more post civil war...Live in chicago, horse stays near DeKalb IL.
