The saga behind this great classic is just fascinating! It's folklore has been regarded by some to have been inspired by a brothel run by a madam who's name, when translated to English would mean "the rising sun".In time,it evolved to many versions (New Orleans) and covered by many artists (The Animals, Dylan,Dolly Parton, etc).

Lomax,an American music historian chronicled the original version with The Library of Congress in the 1930's. The archives credit Georgia Turner,an impoverished teenage girl and miner's daughter as the author of this musical composition. She passed away in '69 from emphysema, collecting only a little over $100 her entire life for her bestowal to American Folk music.
Génial !!!!!! :-)
