My oil submerged pc i built out of spare parts to see what i could do. I live in a very dusty area and this has been running for about a year now without a single crash. Much more stable than the air cool towers i have had here due to the dust. Also there is the wow factor and it is completely silent!
-Update- I am currently rebuilding this due to wanting to try out some new design ideas. I will be posting a longer video that will explain concept, theory, construction, and parts. I hope to have it up and running near end of March 2012.
-FYI - all parts are submerged eccept for the HD (under the lid), the DVDR (USB), and the ports to the MoBo (sit just above the oil).
The oil does not evaporate. The same mineral oil has been in it for almost 3 years now. To replace or upgrade parts I just put a hose in the tank and it syphons out very easily, then let parts remain in tank for a day to drip off more oil, then just lay a cloth on my workbench and work on parts there. There is still some oil on the parts, but not difficult to work with. In almost 3 years of running as seen in the video I have not had a single crash or glitch. Way more stable than any air cooled tower i have built, and I have been building computers for a very long time.

  • As i have mentioned many times now, there are no moving parts in the oil. Hard drive (HD) and DVD-R are not in oil. My new updated design will be on here soon. That will explain more and show more in depth.

  • I did not use a guide. Just research and trial n error.

  • The oil has no oder. Google shop for mineral oil. 12-16 per gal. Clear bottle with yellow and black lable.

  • @macheteboy : is that a question?

  • USB and all other plugs are on the top under the black cover

  • yes you could stick your hand in it, but that is a bad idea due to contaminates from your hand going into the oil, could possibly cause a short in the future.

  • Do i need to change it every 3000 hours or something.

  • put some fish in it ;)

  • I will try this with a PS3 soon :-) this is a great idea. It has YLOD all the time because of overheating so I have to reflow it about every 2 or 3 months. Maybe this will keep it cool ;-)

  • @TWNTRBOZ I have never seen anything like this before. Why now do the components not short out? Can this be done in water? Can this idea be done to any computer component or did you buy specale parts or did you treat them in some way? To me electricity and LIQUID dont mix; especaly computers. Please explain this to me, I am intreeged.

  • Do you have to change the oil ?

  • @buggyguru, Yes you can actually submerge the SSD in the oil. :)

  • This is awesome and quite discrete as you have it set up. I wonder if SSDs would be fine in the oil. That would leave just the PSU and DVD drive? This is the most create pc building idea I've scene since PI.

  • id ont want to sound dumb but when it spins under the oil ....doesnt that slow the notor down and essentially make it hotter?

  • @KILLERThreeSixNine For your first question, I'm not exactly sure how the moving parts work well (should be increased resistance) however for maintenance he does say that he gets the oil out with a hose and it works because mineral oil is non-conductive, as in electricity cannot pass through it. But that doesn't mean it won't absorb heat.

  • That is one amazing PC and I can see why you have no problems with TEMP control...etc.

    Brilliant peice of kit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
