Blatta lateralis roach colony update. Also known as Turkestan, Turks, Lats and Red Runners. These babies are fast too. I had to clean and collect ootheca's (egg cases) the females deposit all over. If you ever have problems with little flys (scuddle flies), I had read that taking nylon sticking and hot gluing it over your existing screen will kelp keep them out. They don't seem to do any harm, just a nuisence.

Also as mentioned in the video, if you see or feel wetness (condensation), remove your lid and let your colony air out for a few hours. Best during the daytime since roaches are nocturnal and prefer darkness, they won't attemp an escape.

Another tip: If you want to control there oder, change there diet. I use to feed mine cat food as was suggested at one point by others. Well it turned out, they stunk pretty good. I almost thought I had crickets again. After removing cat food from there diet, I haven't noticed any major oders. This species does have a slight oder, but nothing overwhelming in my experience.

To make sure your roaches are breedung, give them adequate heat and humidity and you'll have 1000's in no time. I go through roughly 300+ a week currently feeding all my reptiles and inverts. B/ lateralis are great alternative to crickets. My reptiles including bearded dragons and leopard geckos love them. My tarantulas and scorpions readily except them too.

  • Dont they stink?

  • @kru0008 They have a musky odor in large quantities. There are 3-4 distinctive odors when it comes to roaches. Their frass (ammonia smelling), die offs (very offensive in large numbers) their own unique odor, and some have a defensive odor to ward off predators. I keep, breed and raise 35 different species, so there are many different odors. Unless they need cleaning or there are allot of dead, the smell isn't that bad and usually only noticeable when taking lid off.

  • @moose9900 yeah but how are they compared to dubias?

  • @kru0008 They smell more than B. dubia.

  • We have theese in southern california, the only difference is their, they are wild turkistan roaches. You will rarely find males, and the colonies are all seperated there are places for nymphs and adults. Plus the wild ones Males dont get along with each other, when I had males with each other they wrestle and I had to put the biggest male in different cage with 4 females, I hate when it southern california palm springs sand storms happen, if you dont clean cages they can climb them.

  • @moose9900 okay. Thanks for your time sir!

  • 4:24 haha i never thought of that. i was about to ask, how the hell do u get all of them out in a timely fashion

  • I just bought some from this guy :)

  • @papichulo1velez The eggs may be infertile or your temps may be to high. I don't do anything special and they hatch in less than 4 weeks with temps generally in the 80's. My temps fluctuate all the time, Good luck, keep trying.
