i had gotten 2 hermit crabs for my b-day a while ago & didnt have them for at least a month & the one i named (my sister named the other) died for no apparent reason, i miss him :'c

I totally understand! I was at the boardwalk and they sold hermit crabs ALL IN PAINTED SHELLS! I bought a jumbo purple pincer in some ugly spongebob shell and when i got him home i put him in my big tank with my other 2 hermit crabs (In natural shells!) and i came back in about an hour and he already changed into a natural shell! He is fine now, thank God. He's really active and gets along with the other 2 :)

@Grapeapplejk Even assuming the paint is all dry on the inside it's not a great idea. Hermies pick stuff off their shells all the time and often eat what they pick off. I'm not aware of any water/humidity-proof paints that are crab-safe.

@69ChevelleDevil Basically just spread a bunch of different less-conspicuous shells in his home. Hermit crabs change shells for all manner of reasons. A lot like human clothes, actually. They can change because they don't fit there, or, y'know, just cuz they feel like it. If you make other shells available he may choose one that he particularly likes. One thing to watch out for with a painted shell crab is that occasionally the crabs get stuck to the paint on the inside of the shell.

I just got one question... Painted shells are bad for the crabs right? how can i try to make my hermit crab switch into a natural shell for me? lol
