The area of Graves gets its name from the soil. Graves are a mix of gravels, clay and sand carried out by the river. Graves appellation is located just outside the town of Bordeaux. The red wines of Graves are recognizable by their garnet-red color, rich, attractive and more robust than the other Médoc wines. Two third of Graves wines are white. Among the best white wines in Bordeaux, they are generally fresh, fruity and dry (some time half-dry).
The appellation of "Graves supérieurs" is strictly reserved to sweet white wines.
Graves Superieures is the appellation for sweet white wines from the Graves district of Bordeaux. It was created in 1937, at the same time as the generic Graves appellation.
The key sweet wine area of Bordeaux is the southern end of Graves and the area across the Garonne river in the Entre-Deux-Mers district. The most famous of these are location-specific appellations like Sauternes, Barsac, Cadillac and Loupiac. Graves Superieures, however, covers the entire Graves district, and provides a title for sweet wines produced outside the boundaries of these other appellations.
The wines may be made from any combination of the standard Bordeaux white varieties Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle, although (as in Sauternes) Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are the varieties of choice.
