@EasyEnergy before you log in(or logout if you are already logged in), click the user you want to use, at the bottom there should be a list of window managers(you probably only have GNOME and Xterm in there) click xterm, and login, now you are running in "terminal mode" (to start the graphical ...stuff just write startx and press enter.)

Ubuntu 10.04 i386 without an internet connection has been the most frustrating thing that has ever happened in my life. I hope Vtc will clear some of the clutter for me :/
