DNC Holds Summer Meeting, Raises $11.5 Million
Today
Wrapping up its summer meeting in St. Louis, Democratic National Committee (DNC) members discussed the current election season and approved a measure to move back the start date for the 2012 presidential primary season to February. Earlier this month, the Republican National Committee (RNC) approved a similar measure, making Iowa the first state to hold a caucus or primary in 2012.
Vice President Joe Biden addressed the gathering telling them he predicts Democrats will retain control of Congress in the upcoming fall midterm elections. "On Nov. 3 ... there will be in Washington, D.C., a Democratic majority in the House and a Democratic majority in the Senate. That will be the case," Biden said in his speech.
Others speakers included DNC Chairman Tim Kaine, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon(D).
St. Louis is among four finalists slated to sponsor the Democratic convention in 2012, although a host city is not expected to be announced until later this year.
