On 12 October 1963, Marlene Dietrich was a special guest at the Grand Gala du Disque at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen, the Netherlands. She performed five songs and was given the honorary Edison award by Dutch author Godfried Bomans who introduced her with an unusual but amusing speech. The complete show was broadcasted live.
On 29 July 1991, the speech by Godfried Bomans and Marlene Dietrich performing "Where have all the flowers gone" where broadcasted again as part of the nostalgia programme "Het was stil op straat" ("It was quiet on the streets") by Dutch broadcaster AVRO (Dutch or English spoken, Dutch subtitles).

  • One of the greatest personalities that ever lived.

  • It's a bit silly to suppose the Dutch viewers didn't know who Marlene Dietrich was and what she stood for during the war.

The only thing Godried Bomans is saying is that German is a beautifull language, the language of Goethe and Brecht, and that we shouldn't forget that even if it's also the language of 'Arbeit macht Frei' and 'Endloschung'

  • Marlene was not only a GREAT artist but also a soldier

Godried Boman seems like he had at least fourt shots of Jenever before his "speech"

  • Another story I heard about this evening was that Dietrich tried to stop the whole broadcast, because her opening song should have been: "I can't give you anything but love". And what do you think she heard in her dressing room.: Sarah Vaughan singin': "I can't give you anything but love". So Dietrich was pissed off and shouted: Who organised this stupid gala? That whas Willem Duys. A Dutch TV legend. He said on T.V. that Dietrich hit him. Anyway, they calmed her down with drinks......

  • In 1993 i saw an interview with Maria Riva (Marlene's daughter) on dutch television. She could remember a telephone coversation with her mother about this evening. Dietrich obvious was worried that her white dress looked to stiff. So Maria asked her. Dietrich answerd: I never Looked', Then Marlene said: What do you think that man called me? He called me frail, like a little female Fraile!!???. Then she said: Well, i kissed him anyway. Because if he likes female women he has to be kissed.

  • We regret not seeing the scandal between Willem Duys (director of Dureco-records and organizor of the Grand Gala du Disc ) and the "French"Rock and Rollstar Vince Taylor! Taylor told Duys, Duys could do do something with his arse and the Edison they wanted to give him. Vince Taylor went away to Paris leaving Duys behind in a shock.Bravo for Vince who was not impressed by Duys who tought he was god in Recordland! Dietrich was also not amused by this creature of Bomans she did not knew at all.

  • Nun schade das sie so ne böse rabenmutter war...

  • That was perhaps in between the bits where they were licking eachother out...

  • It is said that Bomans and Marlene Dietrich both had some alcoholic drinks just before the recording. They were not drunk but just enough under the influence to give the whole thing a somewhat unusual atmosphere.

  • What you say is just total nonsense because the center of Dutch TV is not in Amsterdam but in Hilversum Dutch TV is not bad or good it try to make TV fore many different taste and interest. If you don't like it don't watch. I guess you watch SBS6 brain dead commercial TV.

  • Sie war so elegant und doch auch fröhlich, kann man sagen komisch in dieser Situation. So erst und doch mit einem Lächeln zum richtigen Zeitpunkt
