Zorba the Greek 1964. Lila Kedrova is Madame Hortence, a faded glory, who "does not have the bugs" and can still put on, a scaled down, show. Lila won the Oscar award for best actress for Zorba.
In 1983, she did it all over again on Broadway in NYC, in the musical version of Zorba the Greek, winning both a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical and a Drama Desk Award.
Alan Bates is laughing with Madame and Anthony Quinn is consoling her: "no more boom, boom".
Walter Lassally won the Oscar for his cinematography. The great, Mikis Theodorakis wrote the music and Michael Cacoyannis directed. Based on a novel by the Greek literary giant Nikos Kazantzakis. Shot on the island of Crete.

  • Thank you for your kind words.

  • I love the timing, the chemistry between the actors and Lila is fantastic! The way she stay true to the character, and plays tipsy throughout the whole scene, and not just in the parts where it would be more comical.

  • Yes, a great talent born in St Petersburg, Russia.

  • Yeah, I know. Her russian-french accent has me highly amused in this film. She seems to have faded into oblivion though. I have found very few interviews, reviews, obituaries and information about her. You have any ideas where to find more?

  • She was in "the Tenant" a Polanski audious classic and "Les Amants(the lovers) de Montparnasse" among others. Her complete filmography is at imdb. She starred in 61 films. Her debut was in 1938's "Ultimatum".

  • Lila Kedrova - God she is memorable. Thank y Ellinik

  • You are welcome.

  • Ahhh.... ese zorba, y su bella dama... Bubulina, de las parejas más puras de todos los tiempos, que buen pedo y un aplauso!!!

  • @waeld123 She won an oscar!!

  • Ρωτάει ἄν μοῦ ἀρέσει!....

  • "These Cretans are so ungreatful" LOL

  • @MacFeeley Eloquently written, perfectly expressed. I am wobbled but not felled.

  • @mwoldin But how could the meaning of Zorba's dance be so profound without the depth of tragedy in the film? There is no sense of "happily ever after" in the last scene, and truly Zorba's time with The Boss is coming to an end. But he dances because of the comedy and tragedy of all of it. Zorba is the essence of man living in the moment, and he makes each one count as if it were the last, because it very well could be.

  • I would like to see the momment when she dies in the bed! I saw that movie many years ago and that part is so memorable! the misery of humanity ! ¿ is it available? can you upload? Ellinikikardia! thanks!

  • They took advantage of her for being a foreign expat Xena- like if Joni Mitchell had stayed on in nearby Matala for too long past her "prime"

  • Great film, great song!

  • What a great character. A simple man, some may say, but he understands how to wring out the utmost pleasure from every moment in his life.
