  • Hi, which of his recordings is this? Thanks.

  • It should be one of earlier recordings. Likely 1958 - 1961, Moscow

  • Thanks truecrypt, you've uploaded so much great music. But I have to say that for this one you should have uploaded Richter's 1974 live performance in Moscow. He was having one of his memorable "extreme" days then... :)

  • Welll... there might be certain issues with Russian recordings made after 1971. So far we are safe ;)

  • Sounds just like a solo reduction of his Concerto #5 andante!

  • I believe this is the ca 1961 studio recording made for DG. Here's hoping we get the rest of the Sonata uploaded on You Tube. thanks for posting.

  • @truecrypt

2 year reply, but I believe from the timings and interpretation this is from London, 1961, but not live recording (London debut).

  • I played this sonata in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in November 9, 1948.

  • La più grande interpretazione che esista !!!!

  • This particular piece is right now still my favorite on the piano. The one piece I'll be happy to play most for now. I'll definitely learn it this year.

  • Yes, and you also need to look into the historical context of the piece. It's one of his deepest works....

  • I have this record on CD. Is very great!!!

  • I am not sure about that. I gave a very convincing performance of this sonata when I was studying at New England Conservatory in about 2001 at around age 20, and I was asked to play the first movement at my jury in 2001. You need to work with the harmonies and understand their place. And also the tone colour especially in the first movement. I am now going to rework this. This and Gyorgy Sandor were the only two recordings I had at the time. But I developed my own ideas as well.
