I think both of us may have lost sight of the sound here. Grrr ...
The blond guy that we (and cookerg) have focused on is playing a cabasa & had a tamborine under his arm that he played when he was off camera. But, I don't see or hear a tamborine? Do you?
And, in the absence of a harmonica (which is not something most drummers can play), I think your query about the regular road drummer is probably right on point. Don't know who he was, but he's certainly the best suspect!
Thanks for confirming that the musician playing harp for Linda is definitely NOT Jimmie Fadden (even though he was there). I guess the mystery shall continue (at least for now)!
In the video you mention of Linda and the NGDB performing together, Fadden is the one seen drumming on the song, which is "Hey Good Lookin'." He's not the same guy off to Linda's right side on this video. Fadden had brown hair at the time and the hair color of the guy in this video is blond. Since Andrew was drumming on this song, where was Linda's regular drummer? Andrew normally played guitars (along with Dan) and keyboards during Linda's concerts tho he did play drums on the studio version..
To continue ... there is video of Linda performing with the NGDB on the same episode of "Rock Concert" (search for "t9xChdBbku0"), and apparently they briefly toured together, and are clearly comfortable sharing the stage. However, I can't tell from the video footage if the guy drumming for the NGDB is the same person who played harp for Linda.
They've done a set and costume change, and the drummer is back behind the singers, in soft focus and is wearing a hat! Can you tell?
While Jimmie Fadden may not have been part of Linda's regular touring band, this was NOT a regular road gig. More importantly, according to Don Kirshner's records for the "Rock Concert" show, the performers on this particular episode (#2.14 - November 20,1974) were: NGDB, Linda Ronstadt, John Hartford, and Steve Martin. So, Jimmie Fadden would have been available to play with Linda. To be continued ...
The harmonica player isn't Jimmie Fadden. Fadden was/is a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and wasn't a member of Linda's touring band because of commitment to that band. There was another harmonica player around at the same time, whose exact name I don't recall but believe he was known as Buffalo. The only trouble is, I also don't recall if he ever played on any of Linda's sessions or as a member of her touring band.
Though TV appearances don't always duplicate the recording sessions ... here are the album credits for this song:
Acoustic Guitar - Bob Warford Arranged By [Strings], Conductor - Gregory Rose Backing Vocals - Linda Ronstadt , Wendy Waldman Bass - Kenny Edwards Drums - Andrew Gold Harmonica - Jim Fadden* Percussion - Andrew Gold , Peter Asher Steel Guitar - Sneaky Pete Kleinow
So, I agree that Andrew Gold is on drums and Jim Fadden is likely the guy on harmonica.
