New York State Senator John Flanagan speaks on an historic agreement to build affordable housing on New York's Long Island. The bill, S.6823-A, approved 6/4/2008, requires builders to set aside a portion of new developments for working families in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, or deposit a fee into special funds that build lower-cost housing, or provide revolving loans to families and individuals who meet certain income eligibility requirements. The bill was crafted with input from developers, business and affordable housing advocates, and represents the most ambitious effort ever to address the housing crunch on Long Island, which is home to some of the nation's most expensivee real estate.
