The Kuwaiti oil fires were a result of the scorched earth policy of Iraqi military forces retreating from Kuwait in 1991 after conquering the country but being driven out by Coalition military forces (see Gulf War).

The resulting fires burned out of control because of the dangers of sending in firefighting crews. Land mines had been placed in areas around the oil wells, and a military cleaning of the areas was necessary before the fires could be put out. Somewhere around 6 million barrels (950,000 m3) of oil were lost each day. Eventually, privately contracted crews extinguished the fires, at a total cost of US$1.5 billion to Kuwait. By that time, however, the fires had burned for months, causing widespread pollution.

  • This is also a part of a war movie, about American Marines in Kuwait/Iraq, they have to pass the oil fields. Who can tell me what the titel of the movie is?

  • @ienimienieminimie What else happened in the movie?

  • how many days were the oil wells on fire for?

  • @choochinbigtime420 They burned from January to November, so somewhere around 300 days.

  • Who narrated this film can anyone tell me please?

  • @CumbyOnThePiss Rip Torn.

  • @0HippyHunter0 Yeah, he ran the world's best amusement park. That part where people had to applaud while family members were being tortured to death before their eyes was the best ride, but the oily slide ride shown in the video was also quite fun. It's a great shame that amusement park got shut down.

Since you've got one of those imbecilic anonymous masks on your channel I'm going to assume you're a troll; I pray for mankind if you're not.

  • @0HippyHunter0 The sad truth is there are many people in the west who would say what you just did in all sincerity. Look up Poe's Law. And if you've got a really strong stomach take a look at the Huffington Post.

  • they should have used this for there excuse to crush Saddam rather than there future bullshit war it might have been a better ending

  • @ienimienieminimie jarhead

  • @ienimienieminimie I think the film you are thinking of is Jarhead.

  • @ienimienieminimie Jarhead

  • @ienimienieminimie i believe you are thinking about the movie "Jarhead" with Jake Gyllenhall. They walk trough the burning oil fields and it describes the war from a much more psycological point of view, than some of the other mainstream hollywood war movies. a bit depressing movie, but good :P

  • @SpellboundSolution I have already found it (after 2 hours searching) the movie called Jarhead.

  • @SpellboundSolution so thats .. 1.5 Billion Barrels of Oil. Thats 63 Billion Gallons / 239 Litres ! Gone. Not like that did anything to affect global temperatures or anything right ... war is a mess.
