Led Zeppelin w/o John Bonham?, (hypathetically) The Doors w/o Ray Manzarek? Black Sabbath w/o Tony Iommi (or Ozzy for that matter)? Rage Against the Machine w/o Tom Morello? Red Hot Chili Peppers w/o Flea? Every band has a different dynamic, and in the beginning The Kinks dynamic was due to exactly what Dave described here. Ray, all due respect, had no part in it. However, as time went on, Ray began to show his full songwriting potential. Fact is, it's not Kinky w/o either of.

@mussman717word It's true though. Take Queen, no Freddy, no Queen. Same with Genesis. Without Gabriel, Genesis lost something very special. The band was still excellent for the next 2 albums, but Gabriel's abscence was missing big time.

That's quite a consumerist way of looking at things.

@mussman717word I always regard the singer of the band "the band". Take away the singer, what do you have? Not to say that Dave wasn't important, but without Ray, the band would not be great.

Dave was The Kinks, Ray became The Kinks. All in all, both are.

@krankiekat AMEN!
-
@Mohammets Ray IS the Kinks. Dave IS a great rock guitar player.

@pjperry123 and aside from that, what he said, and did

@krankiekat I understand what you're getting at and I agree that Dave doesn't get enough credit, but you do realize that Ray composes and arranges the actual rhythm/melody of the song, right? So, Ray has a lot to do with the sound too.

He says he split the speaker cone with a razor blade.
His spoken voice is amazing, so full of karma and so softly spoken. Gives me goosebumps

Ray may be the man behind the kinks words but Dave was man behind the kinks sound, God save the kinks, and both Ray and Dave, because when they are together that's when there is the magic called the kinks who were, are and always will be the best band there ever was to me! -
