A new cathedral is being built in the center of Bucharest at a cost of 600 million euros. Conflict has risen over the government's decision to provide financial support to the project while closing a number of hospitals.Construction work on the Cathedral of National Redemption is progressing at full speed. It will be 125 meters high and dwarf the People's Palace built by Nicolae Ceaucescu. The dictator had a number of churches destroyed in the 1980s, and today's government is eager for friendly relations with the Orthodox Church. Belief plays a major role in Romanian society, and is for many people an important comfort in their poverty-stricken lives.

  • In my neighborhood , on an area spreading the size of 4 bus stations, there are 6 churches. No Hospital, No Schools... 6 churches , all at the main boulevard. The schools are hidden behind apartment buildings... This is Romania... The Orthodox church is very...fundamentalist! And the priests, driving luxury cars, spending tons of money in Supermarkets, using iPads and Smartphones... Probably to keep in touch with GOD!

  • Romania is more religious than other christian countries but not as much as this vid paints the situation.

    There are less and less people going to church every day(despite resurgence after communist religious oppression) and these buildings in a few decades will be just ornaments.

    Not to mention that most of us are dissapointed by the way the church behaves...I won't even discuss politicians which are the no 1 most hated group of all.

  • @bbphnix

    Amice, esti idiot!

  • @slackeriii eu! eu as protesta! ma dezgusta biserica asta!

    si este una dintre marile probleme ale acestei tari, ca 99% sunt religiosi;

    printre putinele lucruri bune pe care le-au facut comunishtii a fost interzicerea religiei! pacat ca nu au reusit ca impuna doctrina ateista.... Ceausescu ar fi trebuit sa tine legatura cu Enver Hoxha

  • @playop they're disgusting pseudo-human beings! those priests should be hanged!

  • @tnt4mind it's exactly a display of power by the church!

    we don't need churches! that money should go to other areas, like hospitals and schools;

    we have cathedrals, think of the one on Dealul Mitropoliei...

    but even if there's wasn't a cathedral in all of Romania, no "cultural landmark:...... good! we don't need churches anyway, they're useless buildings;

    besides a cultural landmark should be something old, passed down through history, not build in 2014

  • @starcraftyt there might be money waisted on other things, but that's no argument for just turning a blind eye to one such waist!

    I am Romanian, and I couldn't loath this story any more... I will protest this church's build and I hope it gets destroyed at the next earthquake if they go ahead with it!

  • @starcraftyt stil that doesn't change the hypocrisy of the church! if they were real christians they'd give those 600 million euroes to help people, poor people, to help hospitals, schools;

    the church has THAT much money and it just waists on more and more churches bigger and bigger?

    this isn't a real church: it's a new elite, taking the place of the communist elite that used to rule the country and it comes with own megalomania, trying to out-do Ceausescu;
