A new still life painting, finally ! Have had a very busy period with my open studio weekends...

I got these quinces from a german customer. They let me pick them from the tree myself. I set up my still life with a halogen spot light. The fill light is a mix of cool and warm fluorescent light, same color as on the easel. You can see me holding up my phone to the painting now and then. I was using a light meter app to see if I had enough light on the painting (maybe move lights closer to the easel). In my day light setup I have about 150-200 lux. Here I had 110 or so. But that's enough. If it gets much lower than that, I can't see enough color, so I usually check first.

The movie was taken on 4 consecutive days. This one took quite long, about 15 hours. Using Old Holland oil paint and graham walnut alkyd medium, mixed with linseed oil...

I had some problems with the gain of the webcam, but I managed to correct this half way or so.

  • Perfection.

This one is some larger than your others, yes?

  • @2darbit yes this was one of my larger ones.....

  • So fun to watch your process! Your art is very impressive!! Do you paint from life or from photos? And about how long did this painting take you?

  • @clarybyui From life, but I had a photograph on my laptop for the leafs. It struck me once again what the differences between a photograph and life painting are. In a photograph I see: 1) less form (ie less 3 dimensionality) eg the quince in the front looks like a more ore less flat disc on the photograph 2) less subtle color....

  • @josvanr Jos, when working from a photo, there is a way to bring back more form and dimension :)

I don't know if many other people use this, but here's how I do it: You create several versions of the photo (I use irfanview for this, it's faster than Photoshop for such simple edits) with different gamma, contrast, etc. Just 3-4 variations. Then you tell irfanview to show you a slideshow with them, with 2 seconds interval. You get back A LOT of dimensionality, much more than from a still photo

  • @calin4thewin interesting idea, I'll try it thnx!

  • @josvanr So to clarify - irfanview has this slide show with alpha blending between photos, and the variations are exactly the same size as the original. This results in a smooth "video" where the photo remains the same, but the brightness / contrast / whatever shift slightly. This resembles the slight movements of a live model, or of your head, or of your eye's variations in exposure, in realtime.

It's very dynamic, keeps you sharp. Try it, you will not be disappointed :)

  • @josvanr Very true, you lose so much from a photograph! Thanks for sharing. I love your work and hope to get to your level some day

  • please add some classic music instead of these backyard noises

  • Ik volg je filmpjes altijd met grote belangstelling en verwondering. Dit is ook weer een prachtig werk. Zoals je de glans op de bladeren en het fruit weergeeft, ze zien er zo sappig uit. Een groot compliment! Groetjes, Angeline
