The exhale should be twice as long as the inhale; i.e. A 3 sec. inhale should be followed by a 6 sec. exhale. Exhaled air is rich in carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration during the production of energy. Poor breathing robs energy and negatively affects mental alertness. Unless breathing is exercised, aging affects the respiratory system.
