Dwain J. Mitchell, 89, of Taylorville died on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at 10:15 P.M. He was born on August 9, 1922 in Bird Township, Macoupin County, Il to Marvel J. and Eunice (Joiner) Mitchell. He married Ruth Whittaker on July 21, 1942 in Cape Girardeau, MO.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a Combat Engineer in the European Theater during World War II from 1941 to 1946 and in Germany from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict. He went to SIU Carbondale and the University of Maryland where he studied engineering. He retired from the Christian County Highway Department as Assistant Superintendent after 39 years of service. Mr. Mitchell was a member of First Baptist Church, Taylorville and American Legion, Post 73. He was very involved with Boy Scouts and served as Assistant Scout Master of Troop 67 for many years.
Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Ruth Mitchell of Taylorville, son, Roger (Jackie) Mitchell of Arizona, and Son-In-Law, John (Martha) Purdy of Florida; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter, Carolyn Mitchell Purdy, 2 Sisters, 1 brother, and 1 great grandson.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2011 from 10 A.M.-12:00 P.M. at Shafer-Perfetti Funeral Home, Taylorville. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 12:00 P.M. at Shafer-Perfetti Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Robinson officiating. Burial will be held at Fraley Cemetery with military rites conducted by Taylorville V.F.W. and American Legion.
