With his deep, croaky rasp, Tonino Carotone is one of those singers who makes you wonder: What must the other band members sound like? The Spanish-born iconoclast first explored punk, but went on to create a wider, more acoustic sound that found success in Italy. This, his U.S. debut, features new and old songs. Carotone sings in Spanish and Italian and uses retro, regional styles, from tango to Mediterranean folk, but adds such modern elements as surf guitar and funky brass. In contrast to his "spare some change?" voice, his bands sound is clear and crisp. Carotone is joined by spiritual brethren Manu Chao and Eugene Hutz, who share a punk-inspired rawness and peripatetic musical tastes. Carotone is not for everyone. His unpretty voice will be a hurdle for many, but he is likely to find fellow musical nomads here in the States.
