The 12th Annual Caroline and Joseph S. Gruss Lecture

Blu Greenberg, Founder and First President of Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance (JOFA) presented the lecture entitled,

"Where There is a Rabbinic Will, There is a Halakhic Way: A Defense and Critique."

This statement, borne of an analysis of rabbinic ameliorations for the Jewish wife in a divorce situation, evoked more backlash than its author anticipated. In her presentation, Greenberg analyzed several halakhic case studies and several systemic methodologies that verify the principle as well as explore the theological tensions such a statement poses. She also posited that these inherited and inherent rabbinic powers should be used more widely by contemporary rabbinic leadership as essential in dealing effectively with women's and other issues facing the Jewish community today.

Moshe Halbertal, Gruss Professor of Law, introduced her.

This event took place on Monday, October 21, 2013.
