@Nibelungenherr1876 He did help them throughout the last 2 movies, but obviously the plot needed a twist otherwise it wouldn'tve seemed tragic enough, I prefer this ending, shows the consequence of being obsessed with something that's bad for you lol

Jackson understood Gollum's character completely wrong. Tolkien had intended him to be antivillain, who certainly has good in him and who finally redeems himself when he (even though accidentally) falls into Mount Doom. There is touching scene in the book when Gollum tries to touch Frodo when he sleeps, the remaining bit of Smeagol still left. But then Sam the asshole treats him like shit. Jackson didn't include that scene because he though that Gollum was never redeemable in the first place.

I understand Gollum was sort of the Antagonist, but I whimpered a little when he died.
