Dieser Film ist sehr ausdruckstark. Die Mittel die Werner Herzog zu Verfügung standen waren minimal. Dazu schaffte er es an unzugänglichen Orten mit Klaus Kinski diesen Film zu verwirklichen. Trotz Tragik, Absurdität und manchmal auch Ironie strahlt dieser Film eine Ruhe aus, die einen von der ersten Minute an in Besitz nimmt. Der Soundtrack der Krautrock Band Popol Vuh verfeinert den Film zu einem wahrhaftigem Uniquat.
