Before we begin, I would like to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for my life, and all the gifts which I've been given in it, including the ability to make this extension. Your name be glorified, my Savior, even in something as small as this. Amen.

Virginia: You feel no pain when you stomp all over people because of the way you think.
Janus: Well, of course. I'm the one doing the stomping, so why should I feel the pain?
Virginia: Calling you a thug is much too flattering...You have absolutely no moral principles. You're nothing but a scumbag!
Janus: Scumbag...? That's an understatement!

We here at Amateur Extension Theater 2000 welcome unnecessary bloodshed! And we're certainly not paying the expenses! Time now for an episode centered around Janus Cascade, the famed Drifter and antagonist from Media.Vision/Sony Computer Entertainment's Wild Arms 3! Assume positions! Alkahest, your host... ready to wreak musical havoc...

Ahem. I am quite silly at times, aren't I? Janus is an interesting character whose personality was abrasive, treacherous, and utterly deplorable. In short: one of the best WA villains throughout the entire series, at least to me.

He first appears in the game atop the roof of a high-speed train, attempting to rob it of its precious cargo. While that doesn't exactly as he planned it, Janus nevertheless makes a daring, perfectly executed escape, one that most players (and certainly the heroes) aren't liable to forget.

Throughout the first chapter of the game, he is presented as a rival Drifter -- Migratory Bird-Scoundrels in the Japanese translation, I think (hehehe! oh Japan, I love your naming conventions) -- which is a kind of explorer/treasure hunter/mercenary. Janus is among the best of the best, and he excels at his craft by way of guile, treachery, and sheer ruthlessness. His weapon of choice is a bolt-action rifle mounted with an absurdly large bayonet blade; he is the only person encountered throughout the game capable of wielding such a weapon, and quite lethally at that.

During the second chapter, Janus discards his gunslinger motif in favor of a much more terrifying, ancient weapon, known as the Dark Spear... Gram-zanber, a recurring villainous lance from the series originally belonging to Zeikfried/Siegfried of Wild Arms 1/Alter Code: F, and later Volsung from Wild Arms 5. Janus has some dangerous new powers to go with his weapon of choice, as well.

He bore great potential as a game-long rival and proved himself a capable, intelligent, shrewd adversary with a sharp tongue and decidedly cruel sense of humor. The problem? Janus is removed from play far too early in the four-chapter long game, replaced by... 'other' villains that, again, to me, never quite lived up to his memorable, 'love-to-hate-him' standard.

He has a considerable amount of back story sadly never touched upon in the game too; all about his miserable childhood on the streets, to the kindly woman who took him under her wing and helped teach him the art of Drifting, to her tragic demise in his trembling arms, to the significance of Lucio, the former leader of the Drifter gang which Janus leads at the start of WA3. It even turns out that for all his bluster and bravado, he "knows what he's doing is wrong and has a guilty conscience about it"... what a fascinating, complicated character.

As to his battle theme, I admit to not having enjoyed it the first time I heard it. By the third time, though, I was absolutely in love with it. Fitting enough, since Janus grew on me over time, too. He technically shares 'Crossfire Sequence' with another villain boss, but... eh, that boss got his own battle theme in WA5, and an extension (by somebody else) for it to boot. I figure, let Janus have his moment to shine.

Yes. Yes, I am a fanboy nerd to the extreme. Be afraid... be very, very afraaaid.
