Last week, the Internet clearly showed that it did not support the SOPA/PIPA bills that were before Congress. As a result of the Web blackout, Washington listened and put a delay on the bills. The topic, however, is still gaining attention.

According to intellectual property attorney Miles Feldman, the "drama is still being written." As someone who has personally been involved with litigation involving the Black Eyed Peas, Will Smith, and others, he told us that he supported the overall purpose of SOPA and PIPA because online piracy is a serious problem. He, however, did not support the language of the bills due to their lack of clarity, which is why he is also concerned about the Anticounterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) that is sparking interest of late.

As he explained to us, finding a balance between freedom of speech and intellectual property rights is an ongoing and challenging battle. That said, he doesn't believe that these proposals serve as effective solutions.

He told us that he would like to see the entertainment industry and the Internet community come together to create a new Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that embraces the concept of SOPA/PIPA but that has a clause that eliminates a safe harbor for companies that are complying with the law.

  • FUCK OFF WITH THIS BULLSHIT SOPA theres a million more important things our government should be worrying about and spending 47 MILLION dollars on thats right there spending OUR taxpaying dollars towards something none of us support

  • @Nhgube You know you're being religious- and not many people are religious. And those who are don't nessasarily practice Christian religion. Besides, everyone 'sins', we're people.

SOPA, PIPA and OPEN can go to hell for all I care though.

  • @T33chuLess0n I wasn't speaking specifically for the RIAA or anyone else, my point is something for nothing doesn't work, call it copying or what you want, it's only fair to pay for something regardless if the format is physical or digital. Secondly I think the RIAA and MPAA are lying about how much money they are losing. The RIAA is not afraid of piracy, they are afraid that the internet has replaced them as the middle man getting music to the public, making them unecessary.

  • @mjbreese Please. These same companies are not only still making money hand over fist but they've also used accounting tricks to screw artist and talent out of royalties. The RIAA was also sued by the government for price fixing shortly before Napster was created. If the MPAA/RIAA got their way VCR's would have been illegal or limited as would MP3 players (RIAA vs Diamond). The RIAA and MPAA have fought innovation at every turn claiming it would bankrupt them yet they're still here.

  • the bill is to vauge..... it basicly says "remove the internet"..... and our laws currently in place for anti piracy are sufficent enough for this. no need for this crap

  • @epunkrockergurl Music is free expression and shouldn't be bought.

  • I just want to be clear I am against pipa/sopa acta because it is not fare to those who are not doing the illegal crap, they could track the person down like they have been doing and leave our freedom alone.

  • I think sopa is bad idea but I do think something needs to be done to stop people from illegally stealing other peoples stuff. because people getting free music, movies, games, software or really cheap stuff that is only a counterfeit, etc. does have a lot to do with why there are not a lot of jobs and why stores are closing down, honestly the people who steal and do all this illegal stuff only have themselves to blame. However there is other ways to deal with this then to strip our rights away.

Money talks & everything else walks.

Control and profit - that's the endgame.
