Joni Mitchell did this one back in the 60s as some of you might remember, but the original version was done in the 50s by an amazing group called Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, who undertook the formidable task of putting lyrics to music in the east coast Bop style of that era (the style of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie), but in addition to that they were delightfully funny as well. Funny to the point of making Dr. Demento look like Ralph Nader. It's tragic that they're not as well known as they really ought to be, so go get turned on to them. The laughs make the research well worth it.
Aloha beinabill. Thanks for the info. I came here as a fan of Joni Mitchell's version of the song, and leave as a devotee of LHR. If you're not already familiar with them, i suggest you check out Tom Lehrer and Jean Shepherd, the first a math/musician/lyricist in the same vein (including more musical styles than jazz) and the latter a storyteller without peer.
Keep on singin'!
Peace, danny
