Not trying to be a smart ass but the C-5 does not have clamshell doors. What you see operating in this video is the forward ramp, ramp extension and toes retracting and the visor closing. The doors in the rear of the aircraft are called the aft side and aft center cargo doors and aft pressure door.
@Angelsword74 I don't have a picture, but the nose cone has round lugs that go straight into round sockets around the door opening. Once the lugs go into place, there are cross bolts that come down on solenoids through holes in the lugs, locking the door closed.
A point of order here as any C5 operator or mechanic knows. This video is not of the clamshell doors closing as they are in the back of the aircraft. This video is of the forward ramp and visor closing. Also, one comment said they thought the aircraft raised up. What you see in this video is the aircraft knelt down. This is done do vehicles can be driven or winched into the aircraft. After the visor is closed, the plane is unkneeled (or stands back up).
does anyone have a video of the locking mechanism for the clamshell door after it closes? I would like to know how the large door gets locked down so the fusalage can get pressurized.
right on...if you want to see clamshell doors...take a look at the old C-141 Starlifter
