This picture book covers the life of Eratosthenes of Cyrene, a geographer who estimated the circumference of the Earth in around 200 B.C.. Though he was in fact a librarian, he is famous for his scientific accomplishments. Since little is known about his personal life, Lasky describes his early years in general terms. He liked to ask questions, loved learning at the gymnasium, and sailed off to Athens to further his studies. The pictures combine with the text to give a clear explanation of how the man came to make his key discovery about the Earth's circumference. A fine combination of history, science, and biography. • I did it on my own, but I was probably inspired by a film version of The Red Balloon, many years ago. I believe that picture books provide an innovative way of teaching history and fables to children of all ages. Check out my other videos including pieces on Brave Bessie Coleman, Bessie Smith, Langston Hughes, Charles Ives, Hammerin' Hank Aaron, Peg Leg Bates, Harriet Tubman, Henry Box Brown, Li'l Dan the Drummer Boy, Miles Davis, Martin Luther King Jr., Philippe Pettit etc. Thanks 4 writing!

  • I like the idea of using a book to make a video. Great job. Did you get the idea from other videos or did you do it on your own.
