The final installment of Eric Whitacre's Ghost Train Series. Unfortunately, both this movement and the second one hardly ever get played. My band was luck enough to get to play the entire work, as intended. Performed by the Mountain View Wind Ensemble in May of 2006.

  • Great job,

    There were some iffy parts

where the blend was kind of blahh..

The band I'm in, Mountain Ridge High School Wind Ensemble, is playing all 3 movements this year,

I get to play the tenor solo :D!

  • The tenor solo is tricky though, due to the altissimo requirements and improvisation. What we discovered was that the trick in making it fit is not to use a jazz tone or phrasing, but to play the improvised parts more classiclly, with a slight edge. That way it fits the low brass backing you up. Good luck!

  • ! You know Mr. Hattendorf? That's interesting.

You guys sounded amazing for 3 weeks on the piece though... Dang.

And yeah I agree... The high G# is killing me. But the F's and F#'s are sounding really nice. :D And thanks for the tip, improving on F# is kind of scaring me... since I'm only a sophomore :x

  • Yeah, Mr. Hattendorf was the head of the ABODA scholarship committee that I interviewed with at All State last year, as well as getting to know him in his summer leadership classes. Great guy!

  • Oh, and by the way, you being a sophomore should have nothing to do with it! I was lead alto in this group when we played this as a sophomore, I'm sure you will kick it's butt!

  • Ahh. I see. Yeah... Mr. Hattendorf is a pretty amazing person. Uncomparable. He does so much for our marching band too. Mm. Thanks for the morale boost! :) I'll do my best and drown people in musical pleasure haha. Good luck in whatever band you are in now! :D

  • Thanks! I'm in the ASU wind ensemble currently.

  • our local high school is going to play all three this spring...our son will play the soprano sax for the tenor part...

  • my band is only doing the 1st movement of ghost train. I play the tenor sax, and would have loved to play the solo in mvt. 2!

  • It's a great piece to experience. I know there were an iffy part or two, but considering we threw this movement onto the concert 3 weeks before the concert, I would say it went as well as it could. I'm sure that Mr. Hattendorf will push you guys to do far better than we did on these pieces.

  • Hey, I'm in that band
