Spiral galaxy M101 is located in the northern constellation Ursa Major. A "zoom" into the galaxy first reveals its location in the nighttime sky. Pushing past Ursa Major into the center of M101 reveals the details in the spiral arms.

  • @twitchalmighty Milky way has 100 000 LY not 85 000...

  • @joshscott911 No the largest known galaxy is IC1011 (over 6 mln LY in diameter)

For example Milky way has 100 000 LY in diameter)

  • not by a long shot

  • beautiful image of a galaxy.

  • So M101 is the largest known galaxy?

  • My mistake, I had that very, very wrong. Take the 20 Billion Light years out, and put 170,000 Light years in. also the milky way is 85,000 light years in diameter. a big mistake on my part.

  • Compared to M101, the Milky Way Galaxy would be practically the size of an amoeba. The Milky Way is 100,000 light years in diameter, where as M101's diameter is closer to 20 Billion light years. the Solar system would be about the size of a hydrogen atom, and the Earth would be close to the size of a Photon. But that is all from theory, and constant thought.
