@turockandar The German horse was called 'Clever Hans' but he knew nothing about maths....maybe the dog has such an acute ability to sense the audience in ways we can't imagine that it is easy for it. I mean if he simply waits a little bit after each pat of its foot then the crowd will automatically clap at the right number for example.

Yes the cookie trick is cruel but don't be fooled by the mathematical trick for that's just what it is. There was a horse on Germany in the 19th century who could supposedly do mathematical calculations but upon closer observation he was responding to the crowds anticipations i.e. when he patted out his hoof x times he could sense a surge of excitement in the people waiting for the answer. Don't forget that a dog's sense of smell is 200 X more acute than ours he could smell adrenaline or sweat.
