Ambassador Shinn will speak about non-western involvement in Africa with a particular focus on China, India, Brazil, Russia and Iran. All of these countries, especially China, have stepped up their engagement on the continent at a time when western nations have leveled off or even scaled back their activities. With an average annual GDP growth rate of 5 percent since 2000, Africa should be a more attractive region for western trade and investment. Yet, it is the non-western countries that are stepping forward. Ambassador Shinn looks forward to engaging the audience in a dialogue on these issues.

Ambassador David Shinn has been teaching as an adjunct professor in the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University for the past ten years. He served for thirty-seven years as a Foreign Service officer in the State Department with overseas assignments in Lebanon, Kenya, Tanzania, Mauritania, Cameroon, Sudan and as ambassador to Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. He has published extensively on issues related to the Horn of Africa and is currently writing a book on China-Africa relations. He has a PhD from GWU.

  • Non-western influence in Africa is the result of 100 years colonization, slavery and the slave trade, theft of natural resources, theft of ancestral properties, genocide by vaccinations famine and western incited wars, and sanctions against African countries not going along with western policies. No wonder non-western influences are so great when doing business with non-western countries.

  • Why is Russia not considered "Western"? They're a product of European marxism.

  • fargon..: How ridiculous that you try to dismiss all the hard evidences of the horrible anti-human crimes committed by a few west colonial powers in human history including the 21th century and how funny that you don't realize you yourself have been thoroughly brainwashed by your highly sophisticated propaganda machine! Your "reality" is based on dirty history of a few major west nations' development. A nation can develop peacefully without messing up with other nations' business, understand?

  • @russiangymfan lol because thats the realty of the world. Either way your wrong because China promotes the biggest killing in the 21st century which is Darfur. lol funny how will try to dismiss all these facts as "western propaganda".

  • No free lunch in this world! Yes, China needs energy, but China-Africa trade is a win-win thing. Don't tell me that west colonialist really want Africa to develop! Chinese can develop their nation without looting, killing, and stealing in Africa. How do you know that Chinese "will do WHATEVER it takes to..."? Such language is pure China-bashing that we hear daily from major west propaganda machine. The biggest joke today is thieves and war mongers lecture morality to Chinese and Africans.

  • @russiangymfan Really? The whole Darfur thing is about China trying to get oil from the Sudan. China is in its early stages in Africa. So its not going to show its true colors yet. At the end of the day China has 1.3 billion people to provide resources to and they will do WHATEVER it takes to extort them. I think there going to be worse than western powers...

  • Why can't China do trade with Africa? At least, Chinese don't bring guns or opium to Africa and forces its own values on Africans! Why can't this biased racist conduct some self-reflection and asks himself this question: Why is Africa still poor after over 500 years of west powers' "trade" with Africa? How many local wars were caused by west colonial powers? How many dictators have been supported by west colonial nations? Young american students are obviously brainwashed by him.

  • No wonder non-western influences are so great when doing business with non-western countries. Western countries impose import quotas on non-subsidized organic African agriculture and subsidized European and American GMO exports. If you want to complain about Non-Western Influence in Africa Ambassador David Shinn-Rumi go look in the mirror and look at your own history.
