Paige breathed in the fresh air, sitting on her front porch that Monday morning. Something about "Hey There Delilah" was so relaxing. She closed her eyes and let herself be swayed into the music. Every note played on the guitar stood out vividly in her mind.
Paige Harris was musically ingrained. It was a part of her, undoubtedly.
"Hey There Delilah" was over. Her iPod was on shuffle; Taylor Swift's radio hit, "You Belong With Me," was blasting in her ears. Paige smiled. For some reason, every time she heard this song, she thought of her long-time crush, Nate Garibaldi. And the brief time he was dating that whore, Michelle Bergins. He actually caught her in a janitor's closet during his junior prom. She was kissing some guy in a Darth Vader costume.
Nate didn't bother with blondes after that.
The sound of a car honk penetrated her earphones. Glancing up, she saw the Garibaldi siblings, waiting on the street. She bounded out of the house and into the car. Her best friend, Lianna, was sitting behind Nate. She was scrawling away fervently on some last minute U.S History homework. "Do you remember anything about Jay's Treaty?!" she hissed at Paige, flipping through her textbook.
Paige laughed, not bothering to answer. Lianna always used textbook answers instead of whatever Paige said. She turned her iPod off. Paige didn't like listening to it when she was in the car with her friends; she felt guilty for being rude.
"'S'up, Harris?" Nate called jovially from the driver's seat. He was turning on to the main road.
"Not much. Just breathing and stuff," Paige stammered, blushing redder than the leaves on the trees outside. She felt like smacking herself. What the hell was wrong with her? Why did her brain refuse to function properly around Nate?
He chuckled. "Yeah, I hear that's kind of essential to life and stuff. Wish my little sis would pick up on it once in a while, you know?" For at the moment, Lianna was hyperventilating. She couldn't find an answer anywhere in the book. "WHY MUST THE SCHOOL GIVE US SUCH USELESS CRAP?!" she screamed.
Paige and Nate both cracked up. Ah, Lianna.

"So, I guess we're done. Matt's gone, and I'm stuck here," Hayley said glumly, twirling her straw in her Coke around. Paige felt so bad for Hayley; she felt like giving her a hug and huge chocolate-chip cookie.
Hayley Pennington was one of Paige's other close friends. She was telling her and Lianna about how her boyfriend of six months, Matt Parker, had left her this weekend. He and his family were moving out to Minnesota, and this had been the last time they would be able to see each other. That is, until Thanksgiving break.
"Who moves to Minnesota anyway?" Lianna questioned, rather angrily. "That's like, THE most random state to move to. Why not Texas? Or Florida?"
"Matt's parents hate hot weather," Hayley responded, grinning faintly. Paige cracked up, giving her a hug. Count on Lianna to bring out the funny in any situation.
"Hey, guys," someone said. Paige glanced up. It was Garret Kielbasa, Nate's best friend. Without Nate. And accompanied by some other dude that Paige didn't know.
"Who's your friend?" Lianna said, eying the newcomer flirtatiously. He blushed pink. Aw!
"Oh, uh, this is Ryan Mills. He just transferred into my math class," Ryan explained, introducing Ryan to the girls. "So, Ryan. You new around here?" Hayley asked him.
"Yeah. Just moved here from Minnesota," he replied. Ryan had a low voice. It wasn't deep; just quiet. Hayley, Lianna, and Paige laughed simultaneously. "What's so funny?" Garret asked them.
"Nothing. It's a girl thing," Hayley told him, grinning.
Ryan took the empty seat next to Paige. "What's your name?" he asked her. She took a bite of her pizza. "Paige," she said indifferently.
"What'cha eatin'?"
"Pizza."
She was used to being played by guys. Paige had a feeling that Ryan was more interested in getting in her pants than her food preferences. It angered her to a cold fury.
"I see," he said, picking up on her hint. He started talking to Hayley, Lianna, and Garret instead. Paige was just sitting there, eating her pizza, ignoring all of them.
She only had eyes for the boy entering the room by himself.
He was making his way to their table, looking stunning [at least, to her] in the ridiculous yet required St. Anthony's uniform. The fitted pale blue polo showed off all the good kinks of his body. Paige wanted to touch them. Badly.
After saying hello to everyone, Nate copped a seat next to Garret, across the table. He was grinning at her, specifically. She blushed, smiling back and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
He motioned to his chin, looking at her. Like there was something on it.
She touched her chin too, wiping off some tomato sauce. Oh.
