This video shows which magical things can be done using two Freescale MCF51JM128 Badge Boards. This design was submitted by Benedikt Imbach to the Freescale CanYourBadgeDoThis contest in 2008.
The idea behind the design is to use the LED's on the board as sensors, and use them for wireless communication between badge boards using visible light. The video demonstrates that you can use this technology to sense objects with light and it can be used for communication. It shows as well how you can use this as a security badge do lock or unlock doors. The design has been created using CodeWarrior and Processor Experts using Embedded Beans. Embedded Beans are a technology to create re-usable embedded software components across platforms. Such Embedded Beans have been created in a research project in the Competence Center Electronics, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Switzerland.

  • That is really sick!

    Congratulation!

The buzzer would be useful to let you know when the transmission is done.

I also wanted to use IR transmission to open my front door using the badge.

  • Yes, we experimented using the buzzer. The buzzer drained the battery too much so we removed it from the demo again. The LED array itself is consuming a lot of the battery energy alone.

  • Great stuff. I want to see what else can be done with VLC in the near future.

  • Oh, good work, Congratulations, this is very good.

  • It uses the LED's on each board as sensors. So it is not using any photoresitors, and it is using unmodified hardware. It is using the LED's to flash to the other side, and the LED's on the other side are are used to sense the light.

  • Geili Sach Beni! Cooli Demo!

Ich bruche leider 100 Mbit/s bi 1m Abstand...

    Gruess

  • congrats on winning the prize..

    good work
