In May of 2000, I joined the UK division of American computer giant, Gateway as a Business Accounts Executive based out of what Gateway called a "Country Store" in Norwich. 15 months later, they shut all of their business outside the continental US down and myself and many others got laid off.
In spite of this, I still look back on my time there with much fondness, mainly because it was whilst doing that job, I met my partner who I am still with today.
Every morning, we were supposed to play a couple of videos, just before we opened the store to get the staff motivated. A bit cheesy, you might think. A bit "American", maybe? Well, yes, but even now, when I watch these videos, I still get a bit of a buzz. They are well crafted pieces of brand marketing and something that companies like Apple went on to emulate later on. Focusing on the inspiration and aspirations of the end users, rather than the technology and the specifications. These videos made you feel empowered by the things Gateway were offering. I recently uncovered my back up copies so I have dusted them off for you to see.
This is the first video, entitled "Applications" and featuring music by Rusted Root. The track is called "Send Me On My Way"
The second video, "Future" is also available on my YouTube page.
