WONG:
A retired police officer in Australia tells about a failed assassination attempt on Queen Elizabeth II. It was back during her tour down under nearly 40 years ago.
STORY:
Eighty-one-year-old former detective superintendent Cliff McHardy says the would-be assassin put a large log across train tracks to derail the Queen's train.
Queen Elizabeth was with Prince Philip in April 1970 when McHardy says they became targets travelling near Lithgow.
McHardy, who headed the Lithgow police force for 11 years, says the train was not traveling fast enough for the log to derail the train. He says to this day the Queen was not aware of the assassination attempt.
The plot was foiled when the log stuck under the front wheels of the train and stopped at a level crossing, out of danger.
If the train had derailed it would have crashed into an embankment. The former detective says the plan was premeditated, probably by someone with local knowledge.
[Cliff McHardy, Former Lithgow Superintendant]:
"Somebody who has known a little bit about local knowledge to do it and it wouldn't be just coming at random and do it it's obviously been pre-planned by whoever did it."
McHardy says details of the alleged conspiracy were kept under wraps to spare the Australian government any embarrassment.
McHardy says police suspected it was an act of sabotage designed to kill or injure the Queen.
Local Lithgow residents say theyre surprised to hear the news.
[Lithgow Local]: (DO NOT TITLE BAR)
"Well I'm amazed. I've never heard of such a thing."
[Lithgow Local]: (DO NOT TITLE BAR)
"I think it's shocking."
Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the alleged plot.
Well, there is a reason why we British sing "God save the Queen."
And the god really listens to us!
LONG MAY SHE RULE!!!

@lambofgod661 What an absurd thing to say. Do you know anything about me? My grandfather fought in the WWII, and my great-grandfather fought in WWI. I would rather you keep your preposterous comments to yourself.
By the way, if you will be replying to this comment then first, talk at least some common sense. Then try to use proper English.
