Understanding Hookup Culture
What's Really Happening on College Campuses
A Lecture by Paula England

When it comes to intimacy and sex, young people today are apparently doing away with the old rules of romance and cutting straight to the chase. If recent reports are to be believed, the rise of hookup culture on college campuses is in the process of killing off dating and courtship, radically altering some of our most basic assumptions about heterosexual sex and gender. But for all the speculation, there's been little beyond anecdotal evidence to back any of these claims up. This lecture by Stanford University's Paula England, a leading researcher in the sociology of gender, aims to clarify what's actually going on. England mobilizes a wealth of data to begin to chart whether the phenomenon of hooking up represents some kind of fundamental change, or whether we're simply seeing age-old gender patterns dressed up in new social forms.

Paula England is Professor of Sociology and an affiliate of the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University. Her research focuses on gender inequality in labor markets, and on how changes in family life are affected by the gender and class systems. She is a former editor of the American Sociological Review.

  • luv it when old people "study" young people then tell them "how they are"...

  • now i understand...i don't like to be hook up...good straight forward speaker!

  • so the millinons of dollars of money colleges get from students tuition is used to fund retarded professors like this. really, a class on sexuality and love?? i was laughing out loud at the old ass guys watching the lecture in shock. the lecturer was so out of touch with modern culture, a 9th grader could have given the same lecture more accuately and in a shorter time

  • The double standard is actually sensible. Our ancestors figured some things out without science. STDs are much more dangerous for women, whom can lose fertility and be unable to carry a child. Men can also be permanently infertile but much mush less likely. Progress towards acceptance of female permiscuity would not be progress at all. Ask yourself: do you think it would be a good thing if your daughter slept around? Perhaps the correct thing to ask about male morality...

  • She didn't exactly need a study to understand this phenomenon, but it helps trumps naysayers anyhow. Good lecture.

  • @Precaseptica Yes, because women are helpless. They can't help themselves from being controlled by environmental factors. Ergo, the problem is with women themselves.

  • Relationships aren't important to most college aged people: too many people are narcissists.

  • @fitobcnfito true true

  • hey, why not homosexuals? wtf? i don't want to hear this old ass lady talk about hook ups!!@!
