4 arraigned in MLA spending scandal
One current MLA and three former politicians were arraigned Wednesday on charges connected to a political spending scandal in Nova Scotia.

Trevor Zinck, Richard Hurlburt, Dave Wilson and Russell MacKinnon were not in court. They were all represented by their lawyers.

Zinck, who sits as an Independent, is charged with fraud, breach of trust and two counts of theft over $5,000. He is due in court on May 20 for election and plea.

His lawyer, Lyle Howe, refused to comment outside the courtroom.

The other three cases came up in Halifax provincial court later Wednesday.

Hurlburt, MacKinnon and Wilson each face counts of fraud over $5,000, breach of trust by a public officer and uttering forged documents.

MacKinnon, through lawyer Joel Pink, elected a judge-only trial. He is due in court on June 21 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.

Hurlburt's election and plea was put over to June 21, while Wilson's is now scheduled for July 7.

RCMP laid a total of 52 charges against the four politicians in February.

Auditor General Jacques Lapointe turned over some files to the RCMP after he looked at MLA spending between July 2006 and June 2009.

  • Oh and one more thing... I live in B.C. and every time the NDP get in to power they royally SCREW UP big time. They don't know what their doing, they are nothing more then idealists & offer cheap answers that only appeal to the simple-minded. Remember the next time you vote, use your brain not your emotions when deciding who to vote for, the NDP are masters at appealing to people's emotions instead of their brains!!

  • Thus is exactly why Politicians shouldn't receive little perks like this, how can they just bill their expenses ( fine dining meals & travel costs) to the tax-payers??? Does your employer pay for your lunch?? Politicians already receive a $ 100,000 salary + a nice pension & benefits ... That's enough!!!

  • Well what a surprise - will the people remember this on election day?

I agree with MrWizardWithin - good to see them get nailed.

They should all have to give apologies to Canadians - they should televise it instead of the latest idol episode.

    WAKE UP PEOPLE

    We are being ROBBED
