The Silver mirror test is a qualitative test for aldehydes, in this case, Glucose.

The Diamminesilver(I) Complex is made by adding Silver Nitrate to water, and to this add Sodium HYdroxide. This precipitates Silver Oxide. The Silver Oxide is reacted with Ammonia to give the Silver Complex.

Upon heating, in the presence of an Aldehyde, the complex decomposes into elemental Silver, that is deposited on the wall of the test- tube.

  • If I had one of those automatic stirrer thingies I would use it to make tea just for the hell of it...

Nice vidoes, very professional feel to them.

  • I did it! It was awesome!

  • after heating

  • Well, the Silver is supposed to precipitate after heating, but on the glass. Try cleaning the glass properly. Get back to me if it still doesn't work :)

  • I tried it but the silver only percipated...

  • At what stage of the experiment did the Silver Precipitate?

  • Its awesome!

  • Greetings what reducing agent do I need to use so I can do this without using heat?

  • wow! a whirpool in the beaker?! o.O'

    i want a magic beaker!

  • Does it have to be heated for the silver to precipitate? For eg the ammonia is being driven off by heat, could you put a vacuum in the flask which will drive off the ammonia too? Or is heat required?

  • i did it it was beautiful but had to be done for around 25 minutes .really very tedious 4 our lab atleast

  • tks 4 the vid. very helpful!!

  • i did something like this in highschool but on a much larger scale. also, i used dextrose and didnt have to heat it. i still have the 250mL flask with the silver lining the entire inside of it.

  • just speak ya pussy

  • @mossydie Hopefully not after you used it in lab ;)

  • Can it be another alternative to make silver for jewellery?
