http://ZehOriginalArt.com Koi in a Lily Pond VI is my Masterpiece painting for the month of March. Two koi fish swim in a garden pond among lily pads and waterlilies. The watercolor painting is done using only three colors: one red, one yellow and one blue. The violets, greens and orange colors in the painting are mixed from these three primaries.
A vibrant, active painting can be made with watercolor by wetting the paper and letting the colors blend on the wet paper. This is called a wet-in-wet technique which is what I used in this piece. Composition elements also contribute to the feeling of movement. In this piece I used circles and semi-circlular elements to create movement: the lily pads, the direction of the swimming fish, the waterlily all create a circular direction.
Even the pond grasses in the upper left corner lend themselves to this movement in the painting. Cutting across the arc of the fish's path is a current of surface water that creates a contrast to this movement.
This unframed painting is size 14"x20" and would look beautiful when framed over a mantle or buffet or anywhere you would like.
