approximately 1/4 oz of C4 would do quite nicely for what you are asking there, just make shure its in a hole in the wood first, and always use the proper size blasting cap, or you might get a mis-fire (cap goes off, not enough kick to set off the c4 = little bang, not proper sized BOOM)

what do you think would happen if you stuck that in a notch up and down in a smaller tree that was still standing? you think it would split the tree upright?

Ever heard the one about the Yankee who figured that his neighbor was inviting himself to his woodpile? He bored holes in a few pieces, to accomodate rifle cartridge cases filled with black powder and a bit of candle wax. Then he plugged the holes.

A few days later, in the evening, there was a sudden burst of sparks out of the neighbor's chimney. And no more wood withdrawals.
